" From Submission to Selection: How Editors Choose Papers"

Rusma Kalra,Ph.D. is a lecturer in the Department of Business English, Faculty of Arts, Assumption University, Thailand. She has over ten years of teaching experience at the tertiary level, focusing primarily on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and business communication writing. Her research interests include classroom-based studies, second language writing, and genre analysis, with particular emphasis on the implications of these areas for English language learners in higher education. In addition to her teaching and research, she contributes to academic publishing as an editor for The New English Teacher (NET), a Scopus-indexed journal. Through this role, she is engaged in promoting high-quality scholarship and supporting the professional development of emerging researchers in applied linguistics and language education. Her academic work is guided by a commitment to enhancing student learning outcomes and advancing innovative approaches to English language instruction in global contexts

Topic Overview:

This session explains what happens to a manuscript after it is submitted to a journal. It will show how editors screen papers, what criteria they use to decide whether a paper is sent for review, and why many papers are rejected early. Participants will learn how to align their work with journal expectations and improve their chances of acceptance especially useful for Scopus-indexed journals.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Editors decide in minutes based on fit, abstract, and contribution
  2. Most desk rejections happen because the paper is poorly positioned for the journal
  3. A publishable paper clearly shows what it adds to the field and why the journal’s readers should care.
  4. Desk-rejected papers are usually fixable by reframing, restructuring, and rewriting for editors rather than supervisors.
